START LEARNING JIU JITSU

Over the years we’ve recognised the need for dedicated Beginners Classes to teach Jiu Jitsu in a safe, protective and structured manner. We understand that stepping through the door of any gym to learn something new can be an intimidating experience.

For these reasons, we’re pleased to announce our new Beginners’ Jiu Jitsu Classes.

Our Beginners Classes run Tuesday,Thursday and Friday, 18:30 to 19:30 and Saturdays at 11am in our modern academy located in the Greenhill's Industrial Village Eircode:A92 F7XY

Please Note: There is no pressure to make every class, you can choose the sessions that work best around your lifestyle

The classes are designed to help beginners learn the basic moves, concepts and principles of jiu jitsu – in an inclusive atmosphere – so that they can eventually transfer over to more advanced classes.

Here are answers to some of the most common questions beginners have about our Beginners’ Classes and jiu jitsu in general…

1. I HAVE NEVER TRAINED JIU JITSU BEFORE

You’re exactly who the Beginners’ Classes (BC) are designed for! The BC curriculum will take complete beginners and introduce them to the basics of jiu jitsu. Many of the techniques are immediately applicable in a realistic self-defence scenario and the classes will help you learn this sophisticated martial art in a structured way.

2. WHAT DO I NEED TO START TRAINING?

All you need to bring with you are:

  1. Some loose clothing (short, jogging bottoms, t-shirt/top) that you don’t mind being potentially damaged. Please no zips (they will scratch our mats).
  2. Some water – it’s thirsty work.
  3. An open, positive attitude towards learning.
  4. A willingness to train hard and put in the work. (We’re a friendly club but we take training seriously.)
  5. Please have good standards of hygiene and cut finger and toe nails.

3. FIRST CLASS NERVES

One of the biggest hurdles to starting jiu jitsu is stepping through the door of the gym for the first time. For many, it can be a tense, intimidating experience. At Primal, there really is nothing to worry about:

  1. Our dedicated Beginners Classes means you will be in the same boat as everyone else and vice versa. There’s no need to feel awkward or like you’re the odd-one-out.
  2. Everyone is too focused on training to notice you. Don’t take this the wrong way but people don’t really care what you’re doing or that you’re new! No one is watching you. That’s in your head. We’re here to teach and train.
  3. Primal prides itself on providing a protective environment for its beginners. You will not be “thrown to the wolves”. Many gyms do not care who rolls with who, but we do. Beginners will be put with responsible training partners and nurtured as they learn the ropes. We do not tolerate bullying of any kind.
  4. Think back to the last time you were the new person at a place. Chances are, it became normal after your second visit. It’s like that with starting jiu jitsu. Don’t let temporary nerves dictate your choices!

4. DON'T TAKE OUR WORD FOR IT...

Here are some of the 104 5 star reviews past beginners have left for us…

5. WHY DON'T YOU MIX BEGINNERS ALONGSIDE MORE EXPERIENCED STUDENTS?

There is a time and place for classes of mixed ability. After years of teaching jiu jitsu, we believe that separating ability is the most effective way to teach – and learn – jiu jitsu.

With classes of mixed ability, some students inevitably feel left behind or held back. By having separate Beginners Classes, you get more focused tuition and attention.

Jiu Jitsu is not the most intuitive martial art and it takes a while to understand the concepts and principles behind it. For many beginners “thrown in at the deep end” it becomes overwhelming and, sadly, these beginners quit. That’s the last thing we want. (When you realise how Jiu Jitsu can change you for the better, you’ll want to stick with it!)

Beginners classes are the best way to nurture you on your jiu jitsu journey. You will learn alongside other beginners so there is no need to feel awkward or the odd one out – everyone is in the same boat.
